Vacca ENGL 2307 19 September 2014 The Stressful Marriage React in Kate Chopin’s â€Å"The Story of An Hour† Kate Chopin was an American author who majored in short stories mostly in topics related to feminism. Her other works include; â€Å"Bayou Folk† of 1894, â€Å"A Night in Acadia† of 1897, and â€Å"The Storm† of 1898. She created her story entitled â€Å"The Story of an Hour† with the aim of using characterization to show how women behave, and the forces that bind marriages. Her character, Louise Mallard, depicts the true picture of both the outward reaction and the inner feelings of women in marriages. When her sister gets the news that Louise’s husband gets involved in a fatal accident and dies, she plans a friendly way of breaking the†¦show more content†¦However, her cry is only made to fool her sister and Richards that she loved her husband, and to prove to herself that she has been relieved from the oppression of her marriage. Her heart problem is a clear indication that her marriage has been stressful. Therefore, the death of her hus band marks gaining of independence. According to Jamil, she would have become numb if for sure she had been saddened by the tragedy of losing her husband. Her heart problem would have triggered her to fall in a comma no matter the kind of comfort she was receiving from her sister and Richards (112). However, the aspect of having a divided mind to both exercise relief of having lost one of the persons who had been oppressing her and showing her love for her husband to her sister and Richards made her to cry dramatically. Her violent reaction after receiving the news shows that she is a demonstrative and emotional woman. Louise does not take time to figure out the accuracy of the information that her sister reveals to her. She rushes to show her emotions outwardly with the aim of fooling those who thought she would be traumatized by the news. Her immediate reaction shows that she is ready to accept the news without having a second thought about their inaccuracy. According to Toth, women who have a genuine love for their husbands become numbed by news of having lost them, and even receive the news with disbelieve. They do
